  2. CURRENT_MEETING_REPORT_
  3.
  4. Reported by Fred Baker/ACC
  5.
  6. Minutes of the Point-to-Point Protocol Extensions Working Group (PPPEXT)
  7.
  8. Status of work in progress:
  9.
  10. Proposed Standards
  11.
  12.
  13. RFC1331 - PPP             In considering PPP for other HDLC
  14.                           encapsulations such as LAPB and Frame Relay,
  15.                           it became clear that the document does not
  16.                           make the difference between the transport (the
  17.                           protocol in the address and control fields)
  18.                           and the PPP negotiation and data services
  19.                           (everything else).  Bill Simpson will
  20.                           reorganize the document, possibly into two
  21.                           documents, and when we concur on the output we
  22.                           expect to advance this to Draft Standard.  We
  23.                           agreed on one FSM change:  when a code reject
  24.                           occurs, the sender should swallow it EVEN IN
  25.                           THE OPEN STATE.
  26. RFC1332 - IPCP
  27. RFC1333 - LQM             Several tested interoperable implementations
  28.                           of these exist, and we have data supporting
  29.                           that.  Mark Lewis will write an ``Experience
  30.                           Document'' supporting the advancement of these
  31.                           and PPP to Draft Standard.
  32. RFC1334 - Authentication   There is work happening on the
  33.                           nas-req@merit.edu list to include a version of
  34.                           CHAP based on recent PEM work, and a Kerberos
  35.                           option.
  36. RFC1220 - Bridging        Rich Bowen of IBM will make a backward
  37.                           compatible update noting experience and adding
  38.                           an IBM SR Bridge BPDU. We will probably want
  39.                           to advance this to Draft Standard when the
  40.                           updates are ready.
  41.
  42.
  43. The following Internet-Drafts have been advanced:
  44.
  45.
  46. ppp-requirements-02   Bill to update and submit as an Informational
  47.                     RFC.
  48. pppext-bridgemib-01   ==> Proposed Standard
  49.
  50.                                    1
  51.
  52.
  53.
  54.
  55.
  56. pppext-cipx-02      ==> Proposed Standard
  57. pppext-ipcpmib-01   ==> Proposed Standard
  58. pppext-ipxcp        One sentence change, ==> Proposed Standard.  Bill
  59.                     will change the sentence and post the draft for IESG
  60.                     consideration.
  61. pppext-lcpext-00    Some Updates Required, which Bill Simpson will do.
  62.
  63.
  64.
  65. Other Work in Progress
  66.
  67.
  68.    o Keith Sklower will revise his load sharing draft (see minutes of
  69.      the joint meetings of IPLPDN and PPPEXT) for further review.  Fred
  70.      Baker is withdrawing his proposal in favor of Keith's.
  71.
  72.    o Novell has prototyped the LAPB and Compression proposals, and has
  73.      donated the time of Dave Rand to document their work and turn it
  74.      into an interoperable consensus specification.  Especially in view
  75.      of earlier poor relations between the working group and Novell, we
  76.      welcome this effort and support.  Fred Baker will put the current
  77.      proposal into a form that can be handed off, and Dave will revise
  78.      it as appropriate.
  79.
  80.    o AppleTalk Smart Buffering and EDDP are under consideration by Brad
  81.      Parker.  He will post updated documents as he is able to complete
  82.      them.  Brad will also record experience in an updated AppleTalk/PPP
  83.      document.
  84.
  85.
  86. PPPEXT plans to have one meeting at the Amsterdam IETF, and two joint
  87. meetings with IPLPDN.
